What is Westwood Christian School?

Organized in 1958, Westwood Christian School is a private, non-profit Christian school, a ministry of the First Baptist Church of Westwood Lake, Inc., which teaches high spiritual and academic standards to over 1,100 students each year in the southwest Miami area. The purpose of the school is to give a solid academic foundation in the fundamentals of learning for the average and above-average student, along with Christian training taught from a Biblical point of view. Our teachers are of the highest caliber and are educationally prepared to give each student a thorough scholastic background. At Westwood Christian School we strive to put the Lord first with an emphasis on patriotism, character building, and discipline.

School and CommunityWestwood Christian Schools was founded in 1958, as an inseparable ministry of First Baptist Church of Westwood Lake, Inc., an independent Baptist church located in southwest Miami. The co-education program of the school includes preschool through high school. Many denominations are represented in the student body. The school is a non-profit organization totally supported by tuition and gifts.

LocationThe schools are located on two separate campuses. Five-year-old kindergarten and elementary (K5-5th) are situated at the church location. The preschool (K2-K4), middle school, and high school (9-12) are situated in the middle of "Horse Country".

EnvironmentWestwood Christian Schools are located in the largest population center in the state of Florida. Miami is a world-famous resort city. Its recreational areas and warm weather attract millions of tourists yearly. Miami has a growing Hispanic population. Many lives can be reached with the Gospel of Christ through fundamental churches located in Miami.

EnrollmentEnrollment at Westwood Christian School has averaged in excess of 1000 students for the past several years. The large number of students has allowed Westwood Christian Schools to offer a variety of programs. Because of the addition of a new high school and preschool building, we anticipate future enrollment increases.

AccreditationThe Westwood Christian School is fully accredited by the Florida Association of Christian Colleges and Schools and by the American Association of Christian Schools.

Faculty and AdministrationWestwood Christian School is governed by the deacon board and congregation of The First Baptist Church of Westwood Lake. The school administration have earned Masters Degrees in Education. The faculty are well-qualified college graduates who have the desire to serve the Lord in a full-time vocational Christian ministry. Teaching faculty have teaching certification (or pending) with the Florida Association of Christian Colleges and Schools.

CurriculumThe educational program is a traditional approach in a college-preparatory setting.

Students are assigned to individual classroom units that are organized heterogeneously. Provision is made for grouping individuals in the basic-skill areas according to relative levels of achievement. A strong Biblical and academically based curriculum is used throughout the school. In elementary, the curriculum includes a Christian reading series, science taught from a Biblical point of view, traditional math and language arts.

Students in 6th through 8th grades are assigned to class sections in which they move through five core subjects of English, Bible, Math, Science and Social Studies.

Emphasis in the secondary grades (9-12) is on a preparation for matriculation into colleges or universities. Honors, AP, and Dual Enrollment courses are available. 

Graduation RequirementsA minimum of 26 units of credit is required for graduation including: English - 4; Social Studies - 4; Science - 3; Mathematics - 3; Language - 2; Physical Education - 1; Electives - 9. The school day consists of 7 class periods. Credits for graduation are based on the Carnagie unit.

Grading and RankingSecondary school grading follows the traditional A through F system with definitions and respective grade points as follows: A (4.0) = excellent, B (3.0) = good, C (2.0) = average, D (1.0) = unsatisfactory, F (0) = failing.

HonorsDeans List designates any student with a 95% grade average with no more than one "B."  Superior Honor Roll designates students with a maximum of two "B's."  Honor Roll includes students with a "B" average. An Honorable Mention List is also published each quarter.
