Athletics
The goal of Warrior athletics is the same as all other aspects of Westwood Christian School – to raise up young women and men who love God and are equipped to serve Him in whatever vocational or professional capacity they find themselves later in life.
II Timothy 2:1-5
“Thou therefore, my son, be strong I the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
“Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
“No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of (this) life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. And if a man strive for masteries, (yet) is he not crowned except he strive lawfully.”
In 1972, when we first began competing in interscholastic athletics, the “Warrior” was chosen as our mascot, and the first graduating class chose II Timothy 2:3 as the class verse. Through the years these verses have become more and more precious to me as they became more and more applicable in my life. Now as Paul admonishes Timothy to pass on what he has been taught before others, we seek to pass on to our athletes what we have been taught about enduring hardness and striving lawfully.
From this comes the simple mission statement for Warrior Athletics:
"Equiping young men and women, through the venue of athletic competition, to be great followers and therefore Great Leaders"
It is my hope that those who choose to represent Westwood Christian School in athletic competition learn to be part of a team, learn to follow, learn to serve, and in doing so –
LEARN TO LEAD
