Language Arts Program
Westwood Christian School’s language arts curriculum employs a sequential approach that equips students with the fundamentals for literary success and appreciation. Kindergarten and lower elementary teachers develop and refine phonemic awareness skills through the explicit teaching of phonics. In addition to mastering oral reading skills, first through fifth grade students engage in active learning through grade level and above grade level literature units that emphasize literary analysis and complementary projects. The language arts program also builds a grammatical framework that supports students’ development of composition skills. Teachers round out the language arts program by integrating spelling and vocabulary skills, poetry, and enrichment reading from a variety of genres.
