Young Scholars Update
The Young Scholars have been busy in recent months!
The 5th graders wrote, acted in and produced their very own video entitled "Narnia News." In "Narnia News," the students gave a summary of the events that occurred in the book, Prince Caspian. Everyone enjoyed this activity, and they are looking forward to the next edition of "Narnia News," which will be produced by the 5th graders and then another edition which will be produced by the 4th graders in upcoming months.
"Narnia News" is a special project that Miss Bumeder was able to start because of a financial grant from the Dade Reading Council. She was able to purchase several books on news reporters and on producing a news broadcast, as well as props and a DVD/CD Burner for the computer lab. Through the books she purchased, the students were able to gain understanding about exactly what a news reporter does and then they were able to write their news stories based on the Narnia book they were reading. There were interviews, breaking news reports, a weather report and even a traffic report! The students did a great job with this project, and Miss Bumeder is excited to see what they come up with for the next edition of "Narnia News."
Both the 3rd and 4th graders have just recently finished books and are beginning new ones as well. The 3rd graders are reading The Indian in the Cupboard, while the 4th graders will begin reading the Narnia series with The Magician's Nephew.
The 5th graders are working on another Narnia book as well, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and are thoroughly enjoying the adventure that C.S. Lewis has written about Caspian and the Pevensie children.
The Young Scholars program is an advanced reading program for WCS students in grades 3, 4, and 5. Students read several above grade level novels and work on projects throughout the year.
