Philosophy of Teaching Business Subjects
A Christian educator must have the proper philosophy of education, for philosophy is the system of values and beliefs that guides his every action. Although there are many philosophical systems and each one claims to have found the truth, a Christian philosophy of education is one that puts the “Bible at the center and [asks] the student and the teacher to evaluate all they see in the world through the eyes of God - because God is Truth” (Kienel 1974, p 65) (Psalm 100:5) The purpose of the Christian teaching of business is to educate the student in both business theory and practice taught in the light of God’s Word (Psalm 36:9)
A Christian approach of business acknowledges God as our Manager, Provider, and Servant. He is the Manger of His Creation and Creatures (Psalm 104), the Provider of both physical and spiritual needs of mankind (Phil. 4:13; II Cor. 9:8), and He is the exemplary Servant (John 9:34; 6:38). In His Word, God provides us with the role model for what we commonly know in the business world today as the manager, employer, and employee.
A Christian view of business differs from a secular view in its practice. While the secular world teaches that wealth, power, and prestige lead to success, the Bible defines success as obedience to His Word (Joshua 1:9). The Christian teacher, guided by the Holy Spirit, is responsible for pointing out what scripture says about the multitude of business concepts such as work (Jer. 22:13; Job 31:13-14), stewardship (Mat. 25:20-21), diligence (Gen. 39:1-6), honesty (Lev. 10:35-36), citizenship (Rom. 13:1-7), etc. By providing a biblical viewpoint in these areas, the Christian teacher will prepare students to make choices that are in compliance with the ultimate purpose of Christian education, conforming to the image of Christ.
In essence, the Christian business teacher seeks to educate the student in both theory and practice. In II Tim. 2:2, Paul instructs Timothy to pass on to others those things which he has learned, in order that they might in turn teach others also. Because a Christian philosophy of business emphasizes the importance of making decisions based on principles found in God’s Word, the Christian teacher has a big responsibility in carrying out this enormous task. However, it is also a tremendous privilege to arm students for this great ministry. With the Bible as the ultimate guide, the Christian teacher is equipped to prepare students for the work of the ministry of business, bringing honor and glory to God.
