LADIES CONFERENCE ~ SEPTEMBER 24-25

Registration forms are at the information desk.

Carol Trahan will be our guest speaker.  Carol (Willett) Trahan was saved in 1981 at the age of 22 out of a life of immorality and the occult. She married Jeffrey Trahan in 1986.  In October of 1994, Jeff ended his life after confessing to immoral sin that devastated their family. At that time Carol was two months pregnant with their third child.  As a result, the Lord showed Himself mighty, intervening in their lives to reveal His awesome power, amazing grace, and unfailing love and mercy. The Lord has led her every step of the way, bringing her to brokenness and the place of complete dependence on Him. Join with us as Carol shares with us "The Triumph of His Grace", her personal testimony of God's infinite mercy and grace.

DIAKONOS ~ Humble Servant

So many have commented on the Licensing and Deacon Ordination Service we had this past Sunday. It was an uplifting service where I believe God was honored. First Baptist Church has been blessed with godly men who have fulfilled the role of deacons in our church. The role of deacon has a rich Biblical history and includes in its ranks famous early Christians like Stephen and Philip. The early church took the office of deacon very seriously, requiring that deacons and their families exemplify Christian virtues in all areas of life. Deacons help to encourage people to be walking with God, and caring for them when needed.  At the beginning of the fall each year our members elect qualified men to serve in the office of deacon. It is crucial that we have an accurate understanding of who is qualified to be a deacon, and who is not.

There are only 2 offices that exist in the NT Church. They are overseer/pastor and deacon. They are both important positions, but they are distinct. Deacons have an incredibly important responsibility in the church therefore, it is important that the right men are selected.

Deacons, like pastors, must be men of quality (spiritually, morally); this is true even though the function of overseers and deacons is significantly different. The Greek word diakonos means humble servant. The role of deacons in the Church is to carry out the physical and spiritual caring ministry (traditionally known as pastoral care) under the oversight/supervision of the overseers. The office of deacon exists so that the overseers can be freed up for leadership and in training believers to serve.  These qualities of a deacon's life are outlined in I Timothy 3:8-16. The standards are high because God desires to have those who are spiritually mature and those who are examples to be serving in the spiritual and physical caring ministry of the church. Next Sunday our church will be voting on two men to fill the Deacon vacancies, we ask just as the early church did, pray for God's will to be known for His church.
